The Low Rise Story
Many stores are selling jeans above the waist, at the waist or below the waist. Then there is super low. The trend towards low rise jeans actually started back in sixties, way before Britney Spears.
Hip huggers were worn in the 1960′s by rock stars like Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin, Jim Morrison, lead singer of The Doors, Jimi Hendrix and others. However, in the 1980′s waist lines went high as bell bottoms and flares took over .

t was British designer Alexander McQueen (who sadly died early in 2010) who is generally credited with starting the low rise revolution with Kate Moss in the “Bumster” in 1996.
Cue Britney Spears in 2001 and the rest is now history. It had taken five years for the low rise trend to sweep west. Now every brand and almsot every jean is a low rise. This makes it even harder to find the right one, with prices going from about $25 to over $250.
Crazy trivia – Did you know that in 2004 a US Senator in Louisiana tried to get low rise jeans outlawed as being obscene. He wanted to fine us $500 every time we showed our whale tails. Now that really is the fashion police. He failed. Can you imagine?
