Jockey International continues to be a privately held company, headquartered in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Jockey employs over 5,000 people around the world. Jockey International, Inc. was founded in 1876 by Samuel T. Cooper, a retired minister who wanted to help lumberjacks suffering from blisters and infections caused by their poorly made wool socks. Consumers learned they could trust him and his quality products; subsequently his tiny hosiery business grew and then expanded into underwear. As Jockey has grown in size and sophistication, that simple commitment to serve their customers has continued to be their hallmark…and the secret of their success.

In 1935, Cooper made underwear history by selling the first brief, a revolutionary JOCKEY idea which competitors laughed at until consumer demand drove them to copy it. This also marked the birth of the JOCKEY brand. In 1982 women won the right to wear Jockey underwear as we introduced our first complete line of women’s intimates. Under the leadership of our first woman CEO Donna Wolf Steigerwaldt, the new JOCKEY FOR HER line turned out to be the company’s most successful venture since the creation of the first brief in 1934. 130 years later they are one of the most recognized underwear brands worldwide is still making quality a guarantee not just a slogan.
