Banana Republic Jeans

Founded in 1978 by Mel and Patricia Ziegler, Banana Republic was originally operated out of two stores as a small vendor of safari and travel-themed apparel. The company catalog that kept Banana Republic in business was a direct competitor of the J. Peterman catalog, parodied on Seinfeld in the 1990s. Characterized distinctly by exotic, elaborate travel stories describing each garment, the Banana Republic catalog, along with the safari gear, was slowly fazed out when the company was purchased and made into a “casual luxury” retailer by the Gap in 1983. Today, Banana Republic’s products are characterized as consistent and conservative office casual wear, featuring staples like khakis, dress pants, dress shirts and shoes for men and women. Now, alongside Gap as one of the best-known brand names in America, Banana Republic is taking its office chic style abroad to Canada and Japan.
